The Growing Stone is a rather intriguing adaptation of Camus’ short tale, set against the backdrop of Iguape's local color. The pacing is slow and contemplative, allowing us to really soak in the atmosphere of this remote town during the lively Bom Jesus festival. D'Arrast, played with an understated intensity, grapples with themes of existentialism and connection as he meets a local man with his odd promise of carrying a stone. There's something distinctly poignant about how the film captures the weight of hope and personal struggle, even amidst the vibrant festival chaos. The practical effects—especially during the procession—add a tactile authenticity that feels right in line with the story’s roots. Definitely a film that lingers in your mind long after.
