The Hangman (2024) has this gritty atmosphere that really pulls you into the backwoods of Appalachia. Wemple's direction feels grounded, yet he manages to build this creeping dread as the cult's dark rituals unfold. The pacing is a bit uneven at times, but it adds to that sense of disorientation Leon feels. There's an interesting blend of practical effects and creature design for the Hangman demon that gives it a tangible presence, unlike too many CGI-heavy flicks these days. Performances are solid, especially the father-son dynamic, which feels raw and desperate. It’s not perfect, but for fans of indie horror with a cult twist, it has some unique touches worth noting.
