The Hood Has Eyez is this gritty, raw look at revenge in the backdrop of urban decay. The atmosphere is thick with tension and dread, right from the jump. Pacing can feel uneven at times, but it kind of works with the disorienting sense of Kimmy's trauma. The practical effects are surprisingly effective; they add a layer of visceral reality to the horror. You get a real sense of how desolate her world is, and there’s a stark contrast between her vulnerability and the brutality of the gangsters. Performances are raw too; there's something unsettling yet compelling about the cast's portrayals. It's a film that doesn't shy away from its themes, perhaps too much for some, but it has a distinct voice that stands out.
