The Hustler really nails that gritty, raw vibe of the early '60s. Fast Eddie, played by Newman, is a flawed but magnetic character. The pacing’s just right; it pulls you in with those long, tension-filled matches. The way it explores themes of ambition and self-destruction is something else. There's a real weight to the performances—Jackie Gleason as Fats is just mesmerizing, and Piper Laurie brings a lot of depth to her role. The cinematography captures the smoke-filled rooms and dim lighting perfectly, adding to the atmosphere. It’s not flashy, but it’s got a realism that resonates. The practical effects are pretty minimal, focusing instead on the characters and their conflicts, which makes it feel more authentic.
