The Italian Machine is a fascinating early work from Cronenberg that dives into the dark corners of obsession and desire. The way he portrays the bike fanatics' fixation on that Ducati 900 Desmo SuperSport is both unsettling and captivating. The atmosphere feels tense, almost suffocating at times, reflecting the characters' desperation. The pacing builds in a way that keeps you on edge, and the performances are raw and intense, especially from the lead. What I find distinctive is how Cronenberg weaves in his usual thematic elements regarding technology's grip on humanity, even within a TV movie format, which doesn't always get the recognition it deserves. The practical effects, while not as pronounced as in his later works, also enhance the sense of realism in the story.
