The Kid Who Only Hit Homers is an interesting take on the classic underdog sports story. Sylvester Coddmeyer III, or SYL, is a 13-year-old kid who's really struggling with baseball, and honestly, it feels very relatable. The mysterious coach angle adds a nice layer of intrigue, giving the film a bit of a magical realism vibe without going overboard. The pacing is pretty steady, not too rushed, allowing us to really feel for Syl's journey. You’ll notice the practical effects don’t overshadow the performances, which are solid for a TV movie – the kids especially bring a genuine enthusiasm. It’s got that wholesome family feel, but there's enough depth in the themes about perseverance and self-belief to keep it engaging.
