The Ladykillers (2004) is a quirky blend of comedy and crime that feels very Coen-esque, with that peculiar humor and offbeat characters. Tom Hanks plays the charmingly sinister Professor G.H. Dorr, leading a group of misfits in a heist against a southern backdrop. The pacing is uneven but in a way that matches the eccentricities of its characters and their outlandish schemes. The old Southern lady, portrayed by Irma P. Hall, is wonderfully sharp and provides a perfect counterbalance to the gang’s antics. The cinematography has that warm, slightly washed-out look that captures the setting well. It's one of those films that might not resonate with everyone, but you can’t deny the Coen brothers' distinct style is all over it.
