The Last Wagon is a solid example of Delmer Daves' work in the Western genre, with a unique twist on the typical settler vs. Native themes. It’s interesting how the film examines trust and survival, especially with the character of Comanche Todd, played by a young, earnest Fess Parker. The pacing is deliberate, allowing for some nice character moments that feel earned. The cinematography captures the rugged landscapes beautifully, which adds to the atmosphere. You can also appreciate how the practical effects are used sparingly but effectively, especially during the Apache attack scenes. A different take on the usual Western tropes, it has a bit more depth than you'd expect.
