Ralph Bakshi's 1978 take on Tolkien's epic is a real curiosity. The animation is a mix of rotoscope and traditional styles, creating a surreal, sometimes disjointed atmosphere that's both enchanting and jarring. The pacing feels off at times, but it captures the spirit of adventure. The voices of the characters, like Orson Bean as Bilbo, add a unique flavor. It's a darker, grittier interpretation than later adaptations, with moments that hit harder due to the visual style. Plus, the way Bakshi handles themes of power and corruption feels raw, more so than you'd expect from a children's fantasy. Definitely not for everyone, but there’s a boldness here that makes it stand out.
