Robert Lepage’s staging of L’Amour de Loin is something else, really. The way those LED lights create an oceanic atmosphere is just mesmerizing. You’re drawn into Saariaho’s world of longing and distant love, which is heavy with emotion. Eric Owens as Jaufré Rudel channels a troubadour's essence from the 12th century; his performance has such depth. The pacing is deliberate, letting the music and visuals wash over you. There’s this ethereal quality throughout that feels both poignant and haunting. It’s not your typical opera experience, more of a dreamlike journey that lingers with you long after the credits roll. Definitely stands apart in the realm of contemporary opera productions.
