So, this 2016 staging of Puccini's 'Manon Lescaut' directed by Richard Eyre really stands out. It’s set in 1940s occupied France, which adds a layer of tension and historical context that you don't always see in opera. Kristine Opolais brings this raw vulnerability to her role, perfectly embodying the conflict between desire and the trappings of wealth. Then there's Roberto Alagna, whose portrayal of the love-struck man is both powerful and heartbreaking. The pacing feels deliberate, allowing the audience to really absorb the emotional weight. Eyre’s production design complements everything—it's elegant yet stark, making you feel the characters' struggles viscerally. Not exactly your run-of-the-mill opera experience, that's for sure.
