The Mighty Peking Man is one of those rare gems from the late '70s that somehow blends adventure, fantasy, and a bit of raw, kitschy charm. The atmosphere is thick with that unmistakable low-budget vibe, and the pacing is all over the place, but that's part of its charm. Ho Meng-Hua creates a world where a giant ape and a scantily-clad woman share a genuine bond, which is interesting in its own right. The practical effects, especially the man-in-suit scenes, are delightfully wonky and have a certain charm that CGI just can't replicate. The performances are earnest, if not a bit melodramatic, which adds to its overall weirdness. There's something captivating about its mix of exploitation and sentimentality.
