The Mourning Forest is a quiet meditation on loss and connection. Kawase’s direction really leans into the atmosphere of the forest, almost breathing life into it. The pacing is unhurried, which might not be for everyone, but it allows the moments of silence to settle in. The performances are raw; especially the chemistry between the young woman and the elderly man, both grappling with their own grief. There’s a distinct use of natural light and environmental sounds that create a very immersive experience. It’s not just about being stranded; it’s about finding solace in nature and each other amidst their personal tragedies. Kawase’s style is so tactile; you feel the forest's presence as a character itself.
