The Mummy (2017) reinvents the classic monster tale with a fresh take, but it’s got its ups and downs. Alex Kurtzman directs, bringing a mix of action and horror, though it leans more on the adventure side. The tone has a blend of dark fantasy with a dash of humor, which can feel a bit uneven at times. Russell Crowe's performance as Dr. Henry Jekyll is a curious addition, but it sort of sidelines the titular character, played by Sofia Boutella, who brings a sinister elegance. The practical effects are evident, even if some CGI moments feel a bit overdone. Overall, it’s an interesting piece in the Universal Monsters revival, but doesn’t quite capture the magic of its predecessors.
