The New God is a fascinating exploration of cultural contradictions, really. Tsuchiya’s personal lens on his relationship with a neo-nationalist punk band creates this odd mix of intimacy and discomfort. The pacing is a bit uneven but that only adds to its rawness. You can feel the tension in each frame, especially when he juxtaposes his left-leaning views with the band’s ideologies. It’s all shot on video, giving it that gritty, almost home-movie feel which enhances the overall atmosphere. The performances range from authentic to jarring, but that’s what makes it distinctive—this sense of not knowing what’s coming next. It's a real deep dive into identity and belonging, wrapped up in a very unconventional package.
