The Opponent is a gritty slice of late '80s action that balances the desperation of its characters with the raw intensity of the boxing world. Greene's portrayal of the underdog boxer is both earnest and relatable, reflecting the struggle of wanting to prove oneself against insurmountable odds. The pacing has this nice ebb and flow between tense fight sequences and quieter moments, particularly the interactions with Borgnine's character, who adds a layer of familial conflict. The fight scenes, while not overdone with flashy effects, have a grounded realism that draws you in. It's the kind of film that feels very much of its time, with a strong emphasis on perseverance and redemption—definitely an interesting watch for action aficionados.
