The Orange is an interesting animated piece from 1992 that attempts to tackle some pretty heavy themes for its target audience. It's aimed at kids around five to eight, but it doesn't shy away from the reality of poverty, which is something I find quite striking. The pacing is gentle, allowing the kids—and us as viewers—to digest the difficult topic. The animation style is simple yet expressive, really driving home the children's emotions and discoveries as they realize their classmate’s struggles. That sense of camaraderie and understanding grows through the film, making it distinct in a sea of more superficial kids' films. The performances are earnest, capturing the innocence of childhood while addressing something so much bigger than themselves.
