The Pearl of Death, directed by Roy William Neill, has this neat blend of classic Holmes intrigue and a darker edge. The atmosphere is thick with tension, as the infamous Borgia Pearl weaves its curse through the narrative. Basil Rathbone's performance as Holmes is sharp, although I didn't find it as dynamic as in some of the earlier films. The pacing is tight, with a fair amount of twists, but it really shines when it delves into the psychological aspects of the characters. Plus, the practical effects for the period are quite commendable, especially the way they handle the scenes involving murder. Definitely a film that keeps you guessing while also showing the darker side of greed and obsession.
