The Remains of the Day, directed by James Ivory, is a beautifully restrained exploration of duty and regret. Anthony Hopkins plays Stevens, the butler, with such nuance that his internal struggles feel palpable. The pacing is slow, but it’s deliberate, allowing the weight of unspoken emotions to settle in. Emma Thompson as Miss Kenton brings warmth and a hint of rebellion to the austere setting. The film's cinematography captures the lush English countryside, contrasting sharply with the rigid confines of Darlington Hall. It’s fascinating how it tackles the themes of loyalty, missed opportunities, and the moral complexities of post-WWI Britain, especially in relation to Stevens’ blind devotion to his employer. It sticks with you, long after the credits roll.
