The Retreat is an interesting little horror piece from 2005, directed by Matt Cantu. It takes you to this isolated island cottage, where a group of college students, lured by the promise of fun and freedom, quickly find themselves in a dire situation. The atmosphere is thick with tension, and that sudden shift from carefree partying to life-or-death scenarios is handled well. The pacing builds nicely, giving glimpses of the killer's menace without revealing too much too soon. The practical effects are decent for its budget, doing a good job of keeping the scares visceral. The performances are a mixed bag, but they add to the chaotic vibe. It’s one of those films that captures that early 2000s horror feel, which is kind of a charm in itself.
