The Rivals (2004) brings to life the chaotic charm of Bath, with all its romantic entanglements. Sir Anthony's attempt to marry off his son, Captain Jack Absolute, to Lydia Languish, who’s got her head stuck in romantic novels, leads to a tangled web of disguises and misunderstandings. The humor ebbs and flows nicely, keeping you engaged as the characters navigate their own desires versus societal expectations. There’s a delightful mix of wit and physical comedy, and while the performances might not be groundbreaking, they’re certainly engaging enough to draw you in. The film has a light, airy feel, typical of early 2000s comedies, and the setting itself becomes a character of sorts throughout the story.
