The Rock is a pretty solid example of 90s action, directed by Michael Bay before he went full explosion mode. It has this gritty, almost claustrophobic atmosphere, especially on Alcatraz. The pacing is relentless, with hardly a moment to breathe between the gunfights and the tension. Nicolas Cage brings a certain neurotic charm as the FBI guy, while Sean Connery’s got that classic gravitas as the prisoner. The practical effects, especially during the action scenes, are quite impressive for the time. You can really see the effort put into set pieces rather than just CGI. It’s not just about the spectacle; there's a bit of depth with themes of loyalty and betrayal woven in there too.
Released on June 7, 1996.Shot on location at Alcatraz Island.Features a mix of practical and digital effects.Cage and Connery's chemistry is a highlight.
