The Russia House is an intriguing blend of tension and romance, directed by Fred Schepisi. It captures the late Cold War atmosphere quite well, with its backdrop of a crumbling Soviet Union. Sean Connery as Barley Scott Blair provides a nuanced performance, walking that fine line between naivety and cunning—his journey through this world is pretty engaging. The pacing can feel slow at times, but it allows the political nuances to simmer under the surface. The cinematography does a nice job of contrasting the bleakness of the Soviet setting with moments of unexpected beauty. The screenplay, adapted from John le Carré’s novel, is layered, making it a distinct take on the spy genre that’s more about human connection than espionage thrills.
