The Satin Spider, a unique blend of crime, drama, and horror, is set in the atmospheric Les Fauvettes School for Girls right after WWI. There's a palpable tension between the stern headmistress, Ingrid Caven, and her gym teacher, Catherine Jourdan, whose morphine addiction and fabric fetish add layers of intrigue. The film's pacing is quite deliberate, allowing the eerie atmosphere to seep in, building a sense of dread and fascination. The performances, especially from Caven and Jourdan, are strikingly intense, and the themes of obsession and desire are explored in unsettling ways. Not to mention the bizarre subplot involving a nude exorcism by the chaplain, which adds an unexpected jolt of surreal horror. It’s certainly distinctive in its exploration of taboo and the dark undercurrents of sexuality.
