The Secret Path is a gritty slice of life that really captures the harshness of a Southern rural existence during WWII. Jo Ann Foley, a 14-year-old, is caught in a whirlwind of abuse and exploitation, living with her grandfather Hank, who’s a real piece of work. The film doesn’t shy away from the darker themes of child abuse and prostitution, but it’s balanced with fleeting moments of hope and human connection. The pacing can feel deliberate, allowing the viewer to sit with Jo Ann’s turmoil, and the performances—especially of the young lead—are raw and impactful. There’s a stark realism to the cinematography that really immerses you in her world, making this film quite distinctive in its storytelling approach.
