Joseph Losey's 'The Servant' is a fascinating exploration of power dynamics wrapped up in a slow-burning tension. You’ve got this lazy upper-class guy, Tony, who hires Barrett, a seemingly perfect servant. The atmosphere is thick with class struggle, and the way Barrett manipulates the situation is just chilling. Pacing feels deliberate, almost suffocating at times, which really lets the characters' true natures unfold. There's a haunting use of light and shadows that contributes to that oppressive mood. The performances, especially from Dirk Bogarde as Barrett, are striking; you can feel the underlying menace simmering. It’s a deft dissection of human relationships, very much reflective of its time yet timeless in its themes of servitude and control.
