The Shooting is a striking piece from Monte Hellman that blends Western and mystery in a really unsettling way. There's this palpable sense of dread that builds as we follow two miners who, along with a mysterious woman, venture toward town. The pacing is deliberately slow, which somehow makes the tension all the more intense. The performances are raw and feel genuine; you can sense the weariness of the characters as they grapple with their suspicions. Hellman's use of landscape adds to the atmosphere—those wide shots can be both beautiful and oppressive. It's not your typical Western, and that's what really sets it apart. The film plays with themes of trust and the unknown, pulling you into its eerie world without any clear resolution. Worth a watch for sure.
