The Slingshot is a curious blend of youthful rebellion and socio-political undercurrents set against the backdrop of 1920s Stockholm. Roland, our young protagonist, is a bit of a misfit, navigating life with a boxing brother and parents who color outside the lines—his father’s socialist ideals and mother’s questionable business ventures create a rich, if chaotic, home life. The film has this gritty, raw feel, really capturing the essence of the times. The performances are fresh, and you can sense the tension between childhood innocence and harsh realities. The pacing meanders a bit, but it allows the atmosphere to soak in. Plus, there’s something unique about Roland turning those illegal condom sales into slingshots; it’s both clever and a bit cheeky.
