The Squeeze (1977) is a gritty and atmospheric crime thriller that has this raw edge to it, really. It revolves around an ex-cop, played by a lesser-known actor, whose descent into alcoholism adds layers to his character. The film captures the seedy underbelly of London, with some striking practical effects for its time. The pacing is deliberate, building tension as he navigates a web of gangsters to rescue his friend's kidnapped daughter. The performances are surprisingly compelling, especially the interactions with the gangsters. There’s a certain bleakness that permeates the whole thing, giving it a unique identity in the genre.
The Squeeze is somewhat of a rarity, often overshadowed by more mainstream titles from the late '70s. It has seen limited releases, primarily on VHS and DVD, with the latter becoming increasingly hard to find. Collector interest seems to be growing, particularly among those who appreciate its unique tone and the portrayal of London's criminal landscape. A few copies can pop up on auction sites, but expect to pay a premium for a decent condition item.
