The Storytellers is quite a unique film, really. Set in the small, impoverished community of Javé, it captures the desperation of a town facing imminent flooding due to a dam project. The atmosphere is heavy with a sense of urgency mixed with a sort of melancholic charm. The pacing feels deliberate, allowing the viewer to truly absorb the struggles of the townsfolk and their reliance on Antônio Biá—a man with the task of chronicling their history, despite the community's illiteracy. What stands out is the way it explores themes of storytelling as a means of preservation. The performances are heartfelt; you can feel the weight of their plight. The practical effects, though modest, serve the narrative well, grounding the film in a palpable reality.
