The Thirteenth Year is an interesting blend of adventure and comedy, wrapped in a family-friendly package. The premise is pretty unique — a kid hitting that awkward teenage phase discovers he’s part mermaid, which leads to some genuine moments of humor and a bit of self-discovery. The pacing has a nice rhythm, not too rushed, allowing the story to breathe a bit. The practical effects, especially the transformation scenes, are charmingly dated, but they add a certain character to the film. The performances are decent for a TV movie, and you can feel the warmth in the interactions, which really drives home the themes of identity and belonging. It’s got that nostalgic Disney vibe that feels cozy and familiar.
