The Wave of Rage is this curious animated piece from '97 that transports you to a submerged future, right off Okinawa. It has this melancholic tone, really makes you think about humanity's relationship with the ocean, especially in the context of rising sea levels. The animation style is quite distinctive; it feels both fluid and experimental, fitting the underwater setting. And while the director remains a mystery, the voice performances carry a weight that adds to the tension between Japan and Taiwan. There's a slow burn to the pacing, which might not please everyone, but it builds nicely towards the climax. Based on a Katsufumi Umehara novel, it’s definitely a unique blend of political intrigue and environmental commentary.
