The Weight, set in the tense backdrop of 1933 Oregon, really digs into the human psyche when pushed to its limits. Samuel Murphy, the protagonist, finds himself in this brutal work camp, and the way the tension builds is pretty gripping. There’s this constant sense of dread as Warden Clancy dangles the promise of seeing his daughter in front of him. The wilderness becomes almost a character of its own, harsh and unforgiving. You can feel the betrayal brewing among the crew, which adds layers to the story. The performances are gritty, with a rawness that captures desperation. The practical effects used in the wilderness scenes really ground the film, making the dangers feel very real.
