The Wendigo (2017) carries this eerie vibe right from the start. A group of teens, drawn together by curiosity, venture into their local synagogue, only to find unsettling mysteries lurking in the shadows. The pacing is deliberate, building tension slowly, which is quite effective in drawing the viewer into the story. There's a rawness to the practical effects that enhances the horror elements—it's not overly polished, which adds to the authenticity. The performances, while perhaps not award-winning, feel genuine and grounded, lending a sense of realism to their fright. The film definitely plays with themes of folklore and the unknown, capturing a haunting atmosphere that stays with you long after the credits roll.
