The Wicker Man (1973) is a real gem in the folk horror genre. Robin Hardy’s direction conjures an unsettling atmosphere right from the start, with its slow-burn pacing that builds dread. Edward Malus is played brilliantly by Edward Malus, whose rigid Christian beliefs clash sharply with the islanders' pagan practices. The practical effects, especially in the finale, hold up well and add to the raw experience. The eerie sound design and haunting music really amplify the film's unsettling vibe. What I find distinct here is the blend of mystery with a critique of religious dogma, all wrapped up in that eerie, sun-drenched isle. It’s not your typical horror flick, and that's part of what makes it stand out.
