The Witches is a curious blend of family, fantasy, and horror, directed by Nicolas Roeg. The film has a distinctively eerie atmosphere, driven by its unsettling visuals and Roeg's knack for crafting tension. The practical effects, particularly the transformation scenes, are something else – they stand out in a pre-CG era and lend a tangible quality to the witches’ malevolence. Anjelica Huston's portrayal of the Grand High Witch is simultaneously captivating and terrifying, really capturing a sense of dread that lingers. The pacing can feel a bit uneven, but it allows for some genuinely memorable moments, especially in its darker themes about childhood fears. It's definitely a unique take on the source material, and worth a watch for anyone interested in Roeg's work or darker family fare.
