Theatre of Souls is this intriguing little piece from 2007, where the atmosphere is thick with dread from the get-go. Lucy, played with a mix of vulnerability and curiosity, finds herself at the mercy of dark forces lurking within the theater’s walls. The pacing is deliberately slow, really letting the tension build as she waits for her ride, but it’s that sense of isolation that really gets under your skin. The practical effects, while not grandiose, have this gritty authenticity that adds to the overall eeriness. The direction, or lack thereof a known figure, gives it this raw, almost indie feel that sets it apart from your typical horror fare. It’s definitely a film that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll.
