Don Bluth's 'Thumbelina' is a curious blend of whimsy and dark undertones. The animation style is quintessential Bluth, rich in detail but sometimes straying into surreal territory. The pacing feels off at times, with certain sequences dragging while others rush through character arcs. Themes of love and longing resonate, especially in how Thumbelina's world feels both enchanting and perilous. The songs, while catchy, are a mixed bag—some linger in the mind longer than others. The range of creatures that inhabit her journey is striking, with Ms. Toad being particularly memorable, albeit quite grotesque. It’s not your typical fairy tale, which makes it distinctive, even if it doesn’t always land perfectly.
