Tiger Bay is one of those films that really captures the atmosphere of its setting – the gritty docklands of Cardiff are almost a character in their own right. The pacing is deliberate, but it builds tension effectively as we follow young Gillie, played with a raw edge by Hayley Mills. The moral ambiguity of her character is fascinating, you almost understand her choices, pocketing that shiny black revolver instead of turning Korchinsky in. The performances are quite strong, especially John Mills as the morally conflicted sailor. The film’s themes of innocence lost and the nuances of crime are portrayed with a sort of understated realism. The practical effects and on-location shooting add a layer of authenticity that enhances the overall feel.
