Tokyo Taxi is an interesting blend of comedy and drama that plays out against the backdrop of everyday life in Japan. The story follows Ryo, a ramen shop owner and aspiring rockstar, who navigates his fear of flying while juggling his affections for a frequent patron, a stewardess. There's a rawness in the performances, particularly from Yamada Masasi, who captures the essence of a man torn between his passions and fears. The pacing feels relaxed, almost meandering at times, but it allows the subtleties of their relationship to unfold naturally. It's not your typical romantic narrative, more of a slice-of-life with those charming quirks that only Japanese cinema can deliver. The contrast of Ryo’s night life and day job adds a nice layer to the film's atmosphere.
