Tora-san's Sunrise and Sunset is a fascinating entry in the Tora-san series, directed by Yoji Yamada. The film has this lovely, laid-back vibe, typical of Yamada’s work, where family dynamics play a crucial role. You’ve got Tora-san, who arrives just as Mitsuo is about to start school, and the awkwardness that ensues feels very genuine. There's a nice balance between comedy and more serious moments, especially when Tora brings home that old man with a twisty backstory. The pacing is relaxed, giving the audience room to breathe and digest the layers of relationships unfolding. Performances are heartfelt; Tora's charm and the interactions with Botan add a special touch. It’s these subtleties in character development and atmosphere that really set this film apart.
