Tropical Manila is an interesting piece, really. The film follows Doo-sik, a man with a complicated past, who escapes Korea for the Philippines but is pulled back into his life when his son, Philip, stands in his way. It’s quite atmospheric, capturing the essence of both countries in a subtle way. The pacing has this almost languid feel, reflecting the tropical setting – it takes its time to unfold. The performances, while understated, convey a lot of emotion; you can feel the weight of Doo-sik’s choices. It touches on themes of family, identity, and the struggles of immigrant life, which gives it depth. Not flashy, but definitely resonates on another level.
