Turn the Beat Around is one of those dance dramas that captures the struggle of reviving disco in a world that seems to have moved on. Zoe, the lead, is an idealist, and you feel her passion and frustration as she faces rejection on every dance floor. The atmosphere is a mix of vibrant nightclub scenes and the grit of an uphill battle. Walsh's direction brings out some nice performances, especially from Michael, the nightclub owner who sees potential in Zoe. The pacing is a little uneven at times, but it gives the film a raw feel. The dance sequences, while not overly flashy, have a genuine authenticity that feels right for the subject. It’s a niche film, but it has heart, if you’re into that kind of thing.
