Underworld is one of those films that really nailed the early 2000s vibe of dark fantasy action. Len Wiseman created a unique aesthetic with that gothic look, and you can see it in the slick production design and costumes. Kate Beckinsale as Selene is compelling; she brings a tough yet vulnerable energy that’s hard to ignore. The werewolves, or Lycans as they call them, are pretty impressive too—lots of practical effects mixed with CGI that still hold up decently. The pacing is tight, with a blend of heavy action sequences and quiet moments that give the story room to breathe. It’s definitely not your standard vampire-werewolf fare; there’s a deeper commentary on the cycle of hate and the possibility of peace lurking beneath the surface.
