Underworld: Rise of the Lycans dives into the backstory of the Vampire-Lycan conflict, shifting the focus from the gothic allure of the earlier films to a more gritty and raw narrative. The production design feels more rugged and less polished, which adds an interesting layer to the atmosphere, fitting for the darker themes of rebellion and enslavement. Michael Sheen as Lucian really carries the film, embodying both anger and vulnerability—his chemistry with Rhona Mitra as Sonja is palpable. The practical effects, especially in the werewolf transformations, are a standout, grounding the fantasy in something tactile. It’s a bit more action-driven than its predecessors, but it still resonates with the series' trademark brooding tone.
