Urban Square: In Pursuit of Amber is an intriguing blend of animation and crime narrative. Ryou Matsumoto, a struggling screenwriter, unwittingly steps into a shadowy world of antique smuggling after witnessing a murder. The pacing feels a bit frantic at times, which oddly complements the chaotic life Ryou finds himself in. Yuki, the girl he teams up with, adds a layer of depth to the story, her character evolving alongside Ryou’s. There's something distinctively gritty about the animation style, almost gritty, which contrasts nicely with the cartoonish aspects. The performances, while not overly polished, bring a certain authenticity to the characters' desperation. It’s a unique exploration of how fiction can become reality, with Ryou embodying the very action hero he creates.
