Valley of the Ancestors is a curious piece, really. Set in the hauntingly beautiful mountains of Kyrgyzstan, it captures this almost dreamlike quality with its sweeping landscapes and sparse dialogue. The pacing is deliberate, allowing you to soak in the atmosphere and the weight of the village's abandonment. You’ve got these three old men guarding their fading memories, and then there’s this young demobilized soldier trying to find his place in a world that feels increasingly empty. The themes of nostalgia and longing are woven throughout. It's distinctive for its practical effects and the raw, unscripted feel of the performances, which lend an authenticity that’s quite captivating, even if it wanders at times. It’s not your average action flick, but that’s what makes it stand out.
