Walk a Crooked Mile is a fascinating blend of crime and drama, set against the backdrop of the Cold War. The tension is palpable as an atomic plant faces a serious security breach, and the film captures that underlying fear exceptionally well. Gordon Douglas directs with a steady hand, allowing the interplay between Dan O'Hara, played by the ever-reliable Louis Hayward, and Philip Grayson, a somewhat stiff but competent John Ireland, to create a compelling dynamic. The noir-ish atmosphere is enhanced by the use of real locations in Southern California, giving it an authentic feel. Its pacing is deliberate, with moments of suspense that keep you engaged. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill detective story.
