Wang Dang is an interesting blend of comedy and drama that really dives into the life of a once-promising director now on the decline. It's set against the backdrop of a film school, which gives it that interesting meta angle. The pacing feels a bit uneven, but that sort of matches the protagonist's own disheveled state. The motel room scenes are a bit gritty, almost claustrophobic, heightening the awkwardness and tension between him and the two students. Performances are raw, sometimes almost uncomfortable, which makes the whole thing feel more real and less polished. Itβs a candid look at the absurdity and desperation that can come with the film industry β not your typical laugh-out-loud comedy but rather a more reflective take on ambition and aging.
