Wanted: Houseboy is one of those indie dramas that really pulls you in with its raw exploration of vulnerability and exploitation. The young protagonist, fresh from a simple rural life, feels out of place in the city’s chaotic urban environment. The pacing is deliberately slow, allowing you to sit with the uncomfortable dynamics between him and the middle-aged gay man he works for. There’s a palpable tension that builds as the house residents exploit his innocence, leading to some pretty dire consequences. The performances are gritty and honest, especially from the lead, who captures that mix of hope and naivete beautifully. It’s definitely a film that sticks with you long after the credits roll, making it distinctive in its unflinching look at desire and manipulation.
